Growing up in India in the 80’s, photographs were a rare luxury. We didn’t have thousands of digital images stored on phones or clouds. Instead, we had a handful of precious pictures—tiny windows into our childhood that captured what we looked like, what we wore, and how we lived. Back then, taking a photo meant dressing up, going to a studio, posing patiently, and waiting days for the negatives to develop. Retakes were a myth. Whatever came out became part of the family album—forever cherished.
Today, life couldn’t be more different. Memories can be created at the tap of a button. Retakes are instant, filters are endless, and sharing is effortless. Yet, something about those old, imperfect studio photos still holds a unique charm.
As adults, life took us siblings to different corners of the world—at point we were not just in different cities, but different countries: Dubai, the US, the UK, and India. We meet each other often, but rarely do all of us end up under the same roof. The last time that happened was nine years ago at my brother’s wedding.
So, for years, we had been dreaming of a full-house reunion. And finally, this summer, when my niece graduated from Leeds University, the timing aligned perfectly. I had the privilege of hosting everyone in my newly renovated home. Five families, one roof, four days—filled with laughter, chaos, late-night talks, and the occasional clash that’s inevitable with so many personalities in one place.
Before they even arrived, I had made one thing non-negotiable: we were doing a family photoshoot. We blocked a full day for it. And among all the plans, one idea stood out—recreating an old childhood family picture. Everyone agreed without a doubt and couldn’t wait for it!
There was just one challenge: we didn’t have the original photo with us. So, we went purely by memory—trying to remember who stood where, who posed how, and what expressions we had. The result? A hilarious, heartwarming attempt that brought out the child in all of us.
We laughed, guessed, argued playfully, and tried our best to mirror the past. In those moments, it felt like time folded back on itself—years flashing by in an instant.
In the end, our recreated photo became more than just a picture. It became a celebration of our journey, our bond, and the love that ties us together no matter where life takes us.
Old memories, new memories—sometimes they blend in the most beautiful way.
